Since 1475, the Bourdy family has tended vines and made wine in the village of Arlay, in the Jura region of France. Not much has changed chez Bourdy in these hundreds of years: the family still lives in the ancestral home built between 1475 and 1500, cellars were expanded a couple times, new vineyard parcels were purchased in neighboring villages, and biodynamic methods were adopted in 2006. The winemaking has stayed much the same, and there is no interest in changing things. Why would they want to? Their wines are superb and known to age for not just years and decades, but generations.

Though wine is their focus, the Bourdy family is also known for something entirely different. It is not technically a wine, though it is derived primarily from grapes, Galant des Abbesses is quite simply fascinating. Fresh grape juice is collected directly from the press, a secret blend of 25 spices and herbs are precisely weighed and added to the juice, the mixture is cooked and reduced for a whole day, then put into barrels with fine old brandy. The liqueur is then aged for a minimum of five years before bottling. This recipe was handed down to the Bourdy family in 1579 by the Lady Abbesses of Chateau Chalon, and they are the only producer of this rare liqueur.

A truly unique experience, the aromas and flavors of Galant des Abbesses are fresh and deep, sweet and savory, myriad and beguiling. It is luscious and rich, but never heavy or sticky, retaining freshness throughout the palate, lingering beautifully without cloying sweetness. It has the natural and balanced acidity of a fine wine allied to the filigree spice of a masterful confection. Really unlike anything else, it must be tasted to be believed.

Bourdy's Galant des Abbesses is made in tiny quantities. We have a few bottles and encourage you to get it while you can. It is sure to be a hit and go quickly at any party, or you can leave it open for months with no loss or detriment to flavor.
